“Black consciousness is not an option, we all have to be in a place where we represent ourselves respectfully. Our blackness is not only defined by our rough looking afro and the colour of our skin. Our interest in our indigenous and native languages, the interest we should have in writing our own history, that is what should make us claim the title “I am Black”. We have to slowly step away from celebrating heroes that were imposed to us by the colonial master, we have to be confident and proud to celebrate black men and women who came before us and more importantly make them fashionable and brands. The identity crisis that we face has cost us a lot already, find your identity and claim your space. Having lived in Apartheid South Africa, I’d edge a black child to know that the colour of your skin is valid, your dreams and aspirations are valid. You can change the status quo; you can change the narrative. Start influencing in your own private space, preach excellence and discipline. Form strategic alliances and networks, put in the hard work, allow yourself to fail. Learn from your mistakes, push on and until you achieve your dreams! Your blackness is your uniqueness, it is your rare and valued tool. Use it and know that the future is in the palm of your hands! “Black Child…You are NOT on your Own!”
