Over the Xmas break I watched Soul (2020), now one Over the Xmas break I watched Soul (2020), now one of my favourite movies ever (plz plz watch it). One of the things I took from the film was to make a list of all the things I enjoyed as a kid and random things that just make you happy. Not necessarily things attached to your purpose but just things that make you feel grounded, present and alive. For example, for me, when I was little painting my hands and mixing loads of different colours together into a weird mess brought me happiness, recreated this activity yesterday in the painting above, put on a chaotic playlist and just painted. No goal in mind just mixing whatever came out on the paper.

A few other things, the smell of a petrol station looool, that good smell of new box of detergent, wearing a mask when it's really cold outside which makes your face feel warm, wearing wellies somewhere reallyyyy muddy, putting on toasty socks that came off the radiator, writing with a pen that glides so well, my plant emerging with a new baby leaf, getting lost in a book while on a busy underground train, when grey British clouds eventually move and you can see the constellations, putting up fairy lights and lighting candles, finding your favourite ever song from your 2015 playlist, finding THE PERFECT discount code, seeing yourself fully represented in a TV show (plz watch POSE too๐Ÿ˜)waiting for the reveal of your dyed hair to see if it's a mess or not, combat boots๐Ÿ˜Ž, the way the air feels the morning of a school trip, driving with all the windows down during a heat wave blasting 22 by Taylor Swift because its too hot to care what you look like, kebabs omfg, getting to the beach at sunset just before the tide goes out, seeing a shooting star at 2am (only happened once but need to see it again), eating spaghetti the day after it's made and the sauce has marinated and it tastes 1000 times better....and more but you get what I mean.

The small things that literally last a couple seconds before you resume the hectic buzz of life around you. That's what this painting symbolises for me, embrace the things you often forget about, they can make the biggest differenceโคโœจ

Editing pieces of my fave Black womxn was so relax Editing pieces of my fave Black womxn was so relaxing and empoweringโค when I was younger my mum put up photos of inspiring Black people in the hallway, Michelle Obama, Nelson Mandela, MLK, Oprah etc, so that everyday when my brother and I would come downstairs in the morning we would go past people that helped pave the way for us to exist in so many ways, so that we knew whatever we wanted to become we could do it. When we came home, after exhausting or peaceful days no matter what happened on the outside with some things out of your control, in that hallway it reminded me of the world I wanted to exist in as I got older, it didn't seem impossible. The more access I had to social media the more I saw Black people that looked just like me, inside and out โค The Black experience is multi-dimensional and seeing these people I included in the video made me feel so seen. Spaces online and in person that represent us, that can guide us no matter how young or old you are, guidance is invaluable. Learning from those doing it in their own unique ways is so helpful and beautiful ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿพ moments can spin out of control, so having a space online and in person to guide you through these times whether that's watching your fave show that has your fave Black and queer lead or reading a book about Black people with superpowers, entering Black community spaces or watching Serena and Simone set another record, these are the moments that bring peace to the chaos. Find your unique peace, do not be afraid to rest in it we deserve peace โœŠ๐Ÿพโœจ

Learning to love them and who you were, forgiving the history and also recognising the importance of standing firm in the person you worked to become today. 2020 helped me re-connect with my past selves, their passions and dreams.
