Hi everyone! My name is Dami Fawehinmi and I am th Hi everyone! My name is Dami Fawehinmi and I am the creator and student lead for @claimingyourspace an art competition and exhibition for BAME students at Newcastle University (side note voting is now open to ALL students and staff! Link in the CYS bio🗳🥳) Originally the plan was to have an in-person awards night and exhibition, however, we were all able to adapt to the world as it changed before us. Being able to see each of these utterly amazing submissions as they came in warmed my heart so much, many stories I related to and was so happy to see them unapologetically put on a platform in a space just for us. Our stories were amplified in a predominantly white space, where as a BAME student, it can feel intimidating to take up space, it feels like you don’t belong and also speaking up against injustices can be intimidating.
You may question if you deserve to be there, but your presence is so powerful! The way students have been able to transform their experiences into paintings, illustrations, stories, spoken word, and more is representative of that power. You stood up for what you believed in and told the world to accept you fully as you are. You do not have to change to fit in here, in this space it is just for you, to keep telling your stories. Having projects and spaces like Claiming Your Space as I grew up gave me so much confidence to be an unapologetic Black womxn, moving to Newcastle I knew it would be so important to keep being that unapologetic Black womxn. Being yourself is the best thing you can be. It's essential to spread opportunities with those around you, support your people, to be loud and proud within art and society. I just want to say a major thank to Inclusion Ambassdors for this opportunity, to our wondeful judging panel for taking part, everyone who has helped share & a massive round of applause for the 14 extremely talented students that submitted and all our BAME students in this city! Remember you have every right to take up space and claim your space!🥳 swipe to see the entrants!!!

There are experiences I live through everyday and There are experiences I live through everyday and can talk about but also experiences I have never been through so I instead educate myself, pass the mic and amplify THEIR voices and the work THEY'VE already been doing.

Google is free and it's not anyones responsibility to educate you but yourself.

One question to ask yourself before taking an opportunity: Are there elements of my existence that are more accepted and means I haven't been through the lived experiences of those more effected by this topic which would effectively silence them more by speaking over them?

If you haven't been through it what makes you qualified to talk over these people? To speak over us and our experiences, to write your own rules on what we go through and what it's like?

Taking these opportunities and speaking over minoritized communities makes you complicit in their oppression. Candice deserves the mic, dark skin Black womxn deserve the platform, pass the mic and amplify our experiences🎤✊🏾❤

Loved every second of being a part of this amazing Loved every second of being a part of this amazing film, being around people with the same dreams and goals to keep amplifying Black stories and narratives🙌🏾❤🎬 that summer we created something beautiful, hope y'all enjoy🥰❤

//Reposted from @abeislegend "😲 SUPRISE: 11 festivals and counting, it’s time for No More Wings to have a home online and I’m so glad we’re doing that with @omeletocom on @youtube

It was always my hope and dream for this film to be widely available to the public. Short films aren’t about money, they’re about furthering your career and sharing your voice with the world. 🙏🏾

So many people all over the world have seen our @bafta & Oscar-qualifying (@TheAcademy) film already, but it’s time for more! I want you to share this with your childhood friends, your family members. I want teachers to share this with their students, maybe as a cautionary tale or perhaps as a celebration of youth. I want young people to think about how their present forges the way for their future.

I want black people to see themselves represented beyond the tired stereotypes that incorrectly have the world thinking we are a monolith.

And, please, know that any praise of the film isn’t just mine, it’s shared with the wonderful cast & crew below:

An identity and personality so powerful, a being that touched your soul, made you feel important and seen. Over the Xmas break I watched Soul (2020), now one Over the Xmas break I watched Soul (2020), now one of my favourite movies ever (plz plz watch it). One of the things I took from the film was to make a list of all the things I enjoyed as a kid and random things that just make you happy. Not necessarily things attached to your purpose but just things that make you feel grounded, present and alive. For example, for me, when I was little painting my hands and mixing loads of different colours together into a weird mess brought me happiness, recreated this activity yesterday in the painting above, put on a chaotic playlist and just painted. No goal in mind just mixing whatever came out on the paper.

A few other things, the smell of a petrol station looool, that good smell of new box of detergent, wearing a mask when it's really cold outside which makes your face feel warm, wearing wellies somewhere reallyyyy muddy, putting on toasty socks that came off the radiator, writing with a pen that glides so well, my plant emerging with a new baby leaf, getting lost in a book while on a busy underground train, when grey British clouds eventually move and you can see the constellations, putting up fairy lights and lighting candles, finding your favourite ever song from your 2015 playlist, finding THE PERFECT discount code, seeing yourself fully represented in a TV show (plz watch POSE too😍)waiting for the reveal of your dyed hair to see if it's a mess or not, combat boots😎, the way the air feels the morning of a school trip, driving with all the windows down during a heat wave blasting 22 by Taylor Swift because its too hot to care what you look like, kebabs omfg, getting to the beach at sunset just before the tide goes out, seeing a shooting star at 2am (only happened once but need to see it again), eating spaghetti the day after it's made and the sauce has marinated and it tastes 1000 times better....and more but you get what I mean.

The small things that literally last a couple seconds before you resume the hectic buzz of life around you. That's what this painting symbolises for me, embrace the things you often forget about, they can make the biggest difference❤✨
